Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappucci - Roma
The crypt is located just under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione commissioned by Pope Urban VIII in 1626. The pope’s brother ordered in 1631 to exhume the bodies of over 4000 Capuchin friars so that they could be placed in the crypt. The bones were arranged into elaborate patterns along the walls, and the friars began to bury their own dead here, as well as the bodies of poor Romans.
